Brief Update…

Potential Deportations in Central Valley

As President Trump's second term approaches, economists in Central Valley, including Kern County, express concern over potential deportations of undocumented migrants. Many of these workers are vital in agriculture, construction, and service sectors. Deportations could lead to higher grocery prices and health risks from unharvested crops, while Dr. Richard Gearhart predicts rising costs in housing and services. The uncertainty surrounding immigration policies creates economic challenges for Kern County businesses and local markets.

Clothing Recycling Bill

California's Responsible Textile Recovery Act requires clothing producers to fund and implement a statewide recycling program for textiles, including apparel, bedding, and upholstery. This groundbreaking bill aims to reduce textile waste, which has grown significantly over the years, and encourages sustainability in the fashion industry. The law will create green jobs and help reduce environmental damage caused by discarded textiles, with the program expected to begin in 2028. The bill is necessary to combat the growing waste crisis.

Front Porch Music Closing

Front Porch Music, a staple of Bakersfield’s music scene for over four decades, is up for sale. Founded by Artie Niesen in 1978, the store became a gathering place for musicians, offering gear and fostering local talent. Following a health crisis in 2020, Niesen has struggled to manage the store, leading to the decision to sell.

Five Guys Burger Closing

The Five Guys Burgers and Fries location in Bakersfield's Rosedale Village has closed, with its signs removed. The Valley Plaza Mall location remains open, but the reason for the Rosedale closure is unknown.

Christmas Tree Drop-Off

Kern County’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program runs from December 26, 2024, to January 6, 2025, offering three tree recycling options: cutting trees into small pieces for green waste containers, self-hauling whole trees to 23 drop-off sites, or composting at home. All trees must be free of decorations, stands, and flocking. Residents are advised to secure and tarp their loads when transporting trees. This program aims to prevent illegal dumping and improper recycling of Christmas trees. Flocked trees are not accepted. Check out the full list of locations here.
