Brief Update

Woolworth Building Opening Soon

The historic Woolworth Building in downtown Bakersfield is set to reopen in two months after a massive four-year renovation led by Emily and Sherod Waite. The project preserves the iconic lunch counter, while adding a second counter, expanded seating, and a basement music venue. The second floor will house new Moneywise Wealth Management offices. City officials praise the effort as a model of adaptive reuse, revitalizing downtown and preserving Bakersfield’s history while creating a hub for business and creativity.

💧Water & Sewer Rates may Soar💸

Bakersfield City Council approved Prop 218 notices for proposed water and sewer rate increases. Water rates may rise by 34% in 2026, with smaller hikes in later years. Sewer rates could jump from $239 to $950 annually, marking the first increase since 2006. Officials cite new regulatory requirements as the reason. The public comment period is open for residents to provide feedback before any final decisions are made, with notices being sent out soon.

🦟Mosquito Season🦟

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance and spread diseases like West Nile Virus, which has caused 12 human cases in Kern County since 2024. To stay safe, use EPA-approved repellents with DEET and eliminate standing water around your home. If mosquitoes persist, call 661-589-2744 or fill out a form online for assistance.
