Brief Update…
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel
Thanksgiving travel is in full swing, with nearly 80 million people expected to travel, surpassing last year’s record. If traveling by plane, it is advised to arrive at least two hours early. The TSA anticipates screening 18 million passengers through Monday. If traveling by car today, the best time to get on the road is before 10am. Good luck to all the travelers and be safe out there.
How to Dispose of Cooking Oil Grease
Bakersfield residents can dispose of used cooking oil and grease for free year-round at three locations: Wastewater Treatment Plant 3, North of the River Sanitary District, and Kern UCO. Drop-offs are accepted Monday through Friday, 8am to 3pm, excluding holidays. Oil must be sealed in containers. Improper disposal in drains can cause costly clogs and damage. This service, once limited to the holiday season, is now available anytime to help prevent pipe backups.

Did you know?
The day after Thanksgiving, often referred to as "Black Friday," is the busiest time of the year for plumbers nationwide. The surge in household plumbing issues is attributed to the increased number of family members gathering in homes, combined with improper disposal of food waste and other items. Common culprits include grease, turkey bones, and starchy leftovers like potato peels, which can clog drains and strain septic systems. Plumbers advise homeowners to take precautions to avoid costly repairs.
