Brief Update…

🔫Safety First

Bakersfield's gun violence reduction strategy, launched in 2022, has led to a 57% decrease in homicides and a 60% drop in shootings as of December 2024. The initiative takes a data-driven, community-based approach, partnering with nonprofits to break the cycle of violence. Officials credit mentoring and gang intervention programs for the success. Delano also reported zero gang-related homicides in 2024. City leaders remain committed to further reducing crime and making Bakersfield a safer place to live.

New Bakersfield Arch

Bakersfield is building a new blue-and-gold arch on Wible Road near the Auto Mall, inspired by the original Union Avenue landmark. The project aims to create a “sense of place” and honor the city’s auto industry. Designed with input from local car dealers, the arch will feature digital messaging but won’t include a footbridge or span the road. The idea was originally proposed by former Councilmember Chris Parlier.

Anti-Aging Age Limit

A California bill seeks to ban the sale of anti-aging skincare products with ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid to anyone under 18. Introduced by Assemblyman Alex Lee, the bill aims to protect young skin from potential harm. If passed, retailers would be required to verify buyers' ages. Similar efforts are emerging in other states as concerns grow over young consumers’ use of adult skincare products. The bill could influence national industry standards.
