Brief Update…

New Parking Law

California’s new Daylighting Law (AB 413) prohibits parking within 15-20 feet of crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety and visibility. Studies show this can reduce pedestrian crashes by 30%. While the city is reviewing crosswalks and intersections for compliance, the law is already enforceable, with tickets issued for violations. Early observations highlight ongoing challenges with drivers yielding to pedestrians.

Monday Motivation

If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say Yes, then learn how to do it later.

Travel Scam

California motorists are being warned about a rise in text-based toll charge scams, falsely claiming overdue payments and directing recipients to fake websites to steal financial information. Scammers often impersonate FasTrak or The Toll Roads, but these agencies never request payments via text. Drivers should avoid clicking suspicious links, verify account activity on legitimate websites, and report scams to authorities. Victims are advised to secure financial accounts and dispute unauthorized charges.

Carbon Capture Project

The EPA approved California Resources Corporation's plan to capture 1.5 million metric tons of CO₂ annually in Kern County and inject it underground. Supporters argue the project will reduce emissions and support local jobs, while critics worry about increased fossil fuel use and minimal job creation. The initiative, monitored by CRC’s Carbon TerraVault, includes safeguards for water protection and emergency plans. Residents may see environmental benefits but face debates over economic and environmental impacts.

“Zip Books” Home Delivery

The Kern County Library has reintroduced “Zip Books,” a program allowing library cardholders to request titles not in the collection. Approved materials are shipped free via Amazon to residents' homes and later added to the library's catalog upon return. The program excludes eBooks, audiovisual items, textbooks, and study guides. Funded by the state library, this service is available until June 30, 2025. For more information.
